SENATOR KERRY TO TOUR GEIGER GIBSON COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER IN DORCHESTER TODAY, AUGUST 10, 2010

BOSTON– As part of National Community Health Center Week, Senator John Kerry will tour the Geiger Gibson Community Health Center in Dorchester on Tuesday afternoon. Kerry will also highlight the $11 billion in federal funding from the Affordable Care Act being invested in to community health centers nationally over the next 10 years. Opened in 1965, Geiger Gibson was the first community health center in the nation.– Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both of Maine. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided a 6.2 percent increase in Medicaid (FMAP) as well as additional FMAP assistance for states with high unemployment. These increases come to an abrupt halt on December 31, 2010, which occurs in the middle of fiscal year 2011 for most states – including Massachusetts.

The health centers will be particiapiating at the Boston Public Schools Middle O! Orientation event for all incoming middle school aged students. It is a great event that will help the students and their families get ready for the start of school. In addition to school orientation the students and their families will be able to visit the Neponset Health Center & Geiger Gibson Community Health Center table to receive information on the services that the health centers offer to their patients and the communities.

The health center will be at the temple to provide health insurance information for those who either need assistance getting enrolled in one of the State subsidized health insurance plans or for those who questions about their current coverage. Description: Geiger Gibson Community Health Center & Neponset Health Center will be at the Boston Children’s Museum on August 31st from 5:00pm-7:00pm. This event is FREE for all of the City of Boston’s youngsters attending kindergarten this Fall. Geiger Gibson and Neponset Health Center will be hosting a table to offer information to parents about receiving any medical care that their whole family may be in need of, especially the little ones that will be attending kindergarten. The kids all need to have start of school physicals and make sure their immunizations are up to date. In addition to the medical services that both health centers offer we will also be on hand to assit families who may need health insurance. We offer a FREE service to all to help them navigate the process of enrolling in one of the State insurance plans. This service is open to anyone with a valid I.D and proof of some sort of state assistance (i.e. MassHealth, SSI, DTA, Housing, etc.).
