Why should I get an updated COVID-19 booster?

CDC recommends everyone stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines for their age group. It’s the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against serious illness.

The updated COVID-19 boosters from Pfizer and Moderna are “bivalent.” Bivalent vaccines protect against two different viruses or two strains of the same virus.

Many common vaccines can protect against even more than two types of viruses or virus strains. The flu vaccine is an example. The updated COVID-19 boosters target the original COVID-19 strain and the newer omicron variant.

Who can get an updated COVID-19 booster?

You can get an updated booster if you:

  1. Completed a primary vaccination series with one of the COVID-19 vaccines.
  2. At least 2 months have passed since the last dose of your primary vaccine series or any booster dose.

The bivalent boosters are only available for certain ages:

  • Pfizer bivalent COVID-19 booster: approved for patients ages 5 and older
  • Moderna bivalent COVID-19 booster: approved for patients ages 6 and older

Why should I get a flu shot?

The best way to prevent flu and reduce your risk of severe illness is to get your annual flu shot! Getting your flu shot also helps to protect people around you who may be at higher risk for complications from the flu. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends annual flu shots for everyone 6 months and older.

Getting your flu shot in the Fall helps to protect you during the Winter flu season.

Can I get the COVID-19 booster and my flu shot together?

Yes! You can get both vaccines on the same day. Harbor Health offers weekly vaccine clinics for patients. You can make an appointment to get your COVID-19 booster and flu shot at the same time.
